SPEARFISH — The interior walls of Spearfish High School’s career and technical education center are going up.
Kirk Easton, superintendent of the Spearfish School District, said the decking for the floor of the mezzanine was expected to arrive today.
“That will be installed and then the second story of concrete blocks will start going up,” he said.
The large, precast, exterior walls, he said, are anticipated to begin being constructed later this month with a mid-November delivery date. It will take about 20 working days for them to be all set in place.
“Once we get those up, it will start looking like progress,” he said.
The school district and RCS Construction, the company hired as the construction manager at risk, broke ground on the $15.35 million center in May.
It is slated to open for the spring semester in 2023-2024.
RCS is proud to contribute to the Custer community with the renovations at Harbach park. Many members of the community were present for the official ribbon cutting with KLJ architecture and RCS Construction. Located right on the Mickelson Trail, the park will be convenient for resting, playing, picnicking, and enjoying French Creek!
DEADWOOD — Lawrence County officials and representatives from the various firms involved in the development and construction of the $52 million Lawrence County Safety and Services Center being constructed in Deadwood broke ground on the project Thursday. The new facility has been a hard sell to many county residents and commissioners alike since its inception, having gone through several budgetary discussions and debates.
SPEARFISH, S.D. – A major addition is on the way to Spearfish High School, but will take some time before fully implemented.
Officials have started construction on a new Career Technical Education Center, which will open in the Spring of 2024. The new facility will give students the opportunity for real-world job experience.
The programs added with the arrival of the new building will be geared towards medical science, building trades and automotive, along with robotics and automation-related areas.
Superintendent Kirk Easton hopes to bring in professionals in those field from whom the students can learn.

SPEARFISH — Construction and school officials, and a couple high school students, marked the start of building the new career and technical education center for Spearfish High School Tuesday afternoon during a groundbreaking ceremony.
“We’ve been waiting on this for a long time,” said Kirk Easton, superintendent of the Spearfish School District. “COVID put it on a pause. I’m glad we picked it up and started running with it. I appreciate everyone’s work.”
“This is a momentous day for us. A very exciting project,” said Joe Hockett, business development manager for RCS Construction, the company hired as the construction manager at risk.
Mike Thibault and his dad had a dream to go in to business together and their love for golf seemed like the perfect fit. After two military tours, and ten years as a police officer, Mike was ready for a change of pace, and the ability to spend more time with his wife and kids. Mike’s dad, who was a healthy guy, passed away last fall after suffering a stroke and a battle with COVID-19. Even through such a heavy loss, Mike pushed forward to complete the dream he and his father had envisioned, with a heartfelt Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting on April 9th. It was a fitting day with beautiful blue skies and the Masters PGA Championship on in the background while family and friends gathered to celebrate all that Mike and his family had accomplished.
This week, we joined the Spearfish School District in breaking ground on the site of the future Career and Technical Education Center.
The RCS Construction CMAR team is honored to celebrate this major milestone as we build a place that will promote the safety and development of the students & staff of the Spearfish School District.
SPEARFISH — Bids for the Spearfish High School Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center came in more than $1.3 million less than expected, Superintendent Kirk Easton said Monday.
The final bid of $15,855,000 came in from 34 different subcontractors, and includes room for contingency expenses. Easton said district officials opened bids.
“I appreciate everybody bidding on this,” Easton said. “It’s an extremely busy building climate right now across this region. Bids came in very favorable for the school district. We have some local contractors that really stepped up and gave us favorable bids.
Easton thanked Bob Conway, of RCS Construction who is acting as the school district’s construction manager at risk, working to ensure that prices do not exceed district bids or expectations. After doing some homework and visiting with prospective bidders for the job, Conway estimated a $17.2 million total project cost. So, members of the Spearfish School Board were pleasantly surprised with the lower bids.
